LEGO was first imported to the United States by the luggage company, Samsonite. During the 1960s, Samsonite produced and sold nearly 200 different LEGO branded sets in the US generating an estimated $5M ($40M in today's dollars) in revenue! Unfortunately for Samsonite, this wasn't enough to keep their emerging toy division afloat and in 1970, The LEGO Group was able to renegotiate the deal and secure US distribution rights all to themselves.
